REDUCE YOUR WASTE

The Waste Hierarchy.

The waste hierarchy is a concept that outlines the best way to best manage waste. The hierarchy is designed to minimise the generation of waste in the first place and promote resource efficiency. The layers of the hierarchy are:

  • Refuse what you do not need
  • Rethink what you do need
  • Repair instead of replacing
  • Reuse as much as you can
  • Recycle right
  • Recover any remaining value
  • Dispose in the rubbish bin as a last resort

MINIMISE YOUR WASTE

AUCKLANDERS, ARE YOU WASTEWISE?

A free e-Learning course for Aucklanders to learn the basics of waste in Auckland, which can be used at any age and stage. It's a 2-hour course where you'll learn everything you need to know about how you can join the journey towards zero waste, simply by reducing and better managing your waste at home.

GET INVOLVED AND MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WASTE

We are lucky to have so many great waste-focused community organisations implementing zero waste programmes throughout the region, in partnership with Auckland Council. There’s so much to discover and get involved with, whether by learning more about waste at a free event or joining your local group.

THE KOHA CAFE

The Koha Café at Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae is serving up delicious healthy food in Māngere, while reducing waste and nourishing the earth. Supported with funding from Auckland Council and lead by the team at Papatūānuku Marae, the café upcycles surplus food destined for landfill, turning it into nourishing meals. The café then composts any food scraps left over, which is then used to grow more food onsite in the extensive māra (garden). The Koha Cafe is an exemplar of a circular, zero waste system in action. Let us celebrate this achievement as a testament to community resilience, collaboration, and a shared commitment to restoring the health of people and planet.
